WILO Radio is on the
air!
In 2010 Lisa Rost launched "WILO Radio"
in her classroom. through the excitement of a live
"radio show" produced entirely by the second graders, she
was able to weave together learning opportunities in the
fields of research, writing, and reading fluency. The
children have so much fun putting their shows together, they
almost forgot how much they are learning!
After hearing about the project, news reporter (and Willow
Dad) Mike Wilson from Fort Wayne's WOWO Radio offered to
come in for a visit. He brought in pieces of equipment
for the students to see, and explained how radio stories are put
together. It was another amazing real-world connection
for our children provided by District 153.
Foundation 153 granted funds to purchase the sound equipment
and storage bins for the research material.

Publishing Magazine to Develop Writing Skills
In 2007,
second grade teacher Lisa Rost wanted to bring her students’
creative writing to the next level. So, with the help
of Foundation 153, she developed “Munch: The Magazine.” Written
and illustrated entirely by her students, the magazine is a
colorful splash of pictures, poems and jokes.
Foundation 153 granted
funds to publish the magazine and to bind it professionally.
And now the kids have a keepsake they can treasure forever.

Building Self-Esteem through Art and
Music at
Churchill
School .
In 2006, renowned artist Tom Krueger
spent four days at
Churchill
School leading students in an
innovative learning experience combining visual arts and
music. Students painted and decorated their
own drums, and then Krueger taught the children drumming
techniques and rhythms. As a culminating
activity, children from each class participated in a “drum
circle,” where they worked together to weave intricate drum
rhythms and percussive nuances together into an amazing
tapestry of sound.
